The
Silver Gate area is famous for excellent snowmobiling. There are over
60 miles of groomed trails in the Gallatin National Forest. The Cooke
City trail system also connects with 50 miles of groomed trails in Wyoming.
Cooke City can be accessed only through Yellow-stone's Mammoth entrance
at Gardiner in the winter. Access to the Northeast Gate from Cody is
closed to vehicular traffic because of heavy snow over the passes. The
season runs Thanksgiving through mid-May. There is a shuttle service
between Mammoth and Cooke City.
Archaeology lovers will be intrigued
by the "Grasshopper Glacier." The glacier has dark bands of
grasshoppers that have been frozen within the Ice for centuries. The
migrating grasshoppers were caught in one of the harsh storms relatively
common to the high-altitude area. Usually about August, enough snow
has melted away that the dark band is visible. If you're pulling a high-clearance
4-wheel drive vehicle (necessary even to begin the journey up LuLu Pass-Goose
Lake Road), then consider putting the side trip on your itinerary. You
need to make a very strenuous hike to get to the glacier; don't attempt
this climb unless you're in great shape, and do not even think about
driving your RV in here.
